Adrian Wilson doesn’t want to hide the bias, so he fesses up. He and Karlos Dansby are tight. Their wives are good friends; Wilson said Dansby is his closest friend on the team. So that’s the prism within which the Cardinals’ safety evaluates the linebacker, a linebacker who is playing under the franchise tag this season and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. “Karlos,” Wilson said, “is the type of player we need to keep.” It’s Dansby’s skills on the field that generate Wilson’s response. And there has been little question the Cardinals want to keep their 2004 second-round pick around long-term. They can’t do it right now – under the rules of the franchise tag, Dansby is collecting a one-year salary of more than $8 million, but the team cannot re-sign him to a new deal until the season is over. The two sides tried to talk about a long-term deal last offseason before the tag was used, but Dansby eyed the monster contract former teammate Calvin Pace got from the Jets (six years, $42 million with $22 million in guarantees) and talks went nowhere. In the meantime, Dansby waits. “I am in the dark right now,” Dansby said. “I don’t have a clue what will take place. READ MORE

He isn't the franchise player for nothing. Karlos Dansby, a leader of what might turn out to be one of the NFL's best defenses, not long ago was known as a talented player limited by annual injuries. Today, he is - of all things - a team captain, a guy who's supposed to inspire those around him. Dansby's progress is big for a team that wants to show it's a contender for the playoffs - a team that could be the best the franchise has produced in the 20-year Arizona era. "There's no question Karlos is a very important part of what we're trying to build here for the long term," general manager Rod Graves said. "He's one of our core players." READ MORE |

Dansby records 7 tackles in Cardinals 23-13 win at San Fran Karlos captained a defense on Sunday that created five turnovers setting up the offense for 23 points. SAN FRANCISCO – Stuck in a halftime tie that shouldn’t have been, the Cardinals adjusted their offense Sunday to throw the ball more often. Then, after building a lead, they ran the ball, and ran, and ran some more, bleeding the clock. And when it was over, the Cards owned a 23-13 road win over the 49ers at Candlestick Park. They also owned – albeit much too early to matter much – sole possession of first place in the NFC West. “This is what happens,” running back Edgerrin James said, “when you play together over and over.” The win wasn’t from a textbook. Defensively it was close, after the Cardinals (1-0) came up with five turnovers and played havoc with new 49ers quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan. But the 49ers still outgained the Cardinals, 291 yards to 285. READ MORE |
