Cardinals now in tie for first place ST. LOUIS – All week, coach Ken Whisenhunt was concerned about his team’s trip to play the Rams becoming a trap game.
Sunday, Whisenhunt showed he had foresight. But his team showed him they could overcome such pitfalls. In one of the stranger games of the NFL year, with the Cardinals losing starting quarterback Matt Leinart perhaps for the season with a fractured collarbone, the Cards still managed to move into a tie for first place in the NFC West with a 34-31 victory over the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome. “There was a lot going on, a lot of things thrown at us as a football team,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “We responded.” The battered Rams (0-5) were driving early in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 20. But an attempted out route thrown by fill-in starting quarterback Gus Frerotte was off – and Cardinals cornerback Rod Hood made the interception and raced 68 yards for a lead the Cardinals (3-2) never relinquished. “There was nothing but green grass in front of me,” said Hood, who had two interceptions in the game. Karlos sacked Ravens’ quarterbacks Steve McNair and Kyle Boler on Sunday giving him 2 sacks for the game and his fifth multi-sack performance of his career. Dansby now ranks 10th in the NFL with 2.5 sacks and added 7 tackles, 5 solo, to increase his totals to 23 for the season. In his last 14 games, Karlos has recorded a league best 10.5 sacks. Karlos logs 5 solo tackles, helps contain Alexander to 70 yards The problem was there was still a second left on the clock before the Cardinals and their kicker could fully celebrate the dramatic 23-20 win.
That was about all that didn’t go right for the Cardinals at the tail end of the game at University of Phoenix Stadium. As heartbreaking as the opening Monday night loss was in San Francisco, this one was as exhilarating. That’s why Rackers was ready to run off the field, later unable to remember anything his teammates had been saying because he was so happy. That’s why quarterback Matt Leinart, so poor in the season opener before bouncing back to a 23-for-37 passing day for 299 yards, shared an embrace with offensive lineman Reggie Wells. It’s why a couple of Cardinals made sure to acknowledge the 65,542 fans in attendance, after the deafening noise they created was one of the reasons the Seahawks made their game-turning fumble. |
