NFL Players Aren't Always About Bad News

MecoKarlosHSVMichael Vick and allegations of dogfighting. Pacman Jones "making it rain" at a Vegas strip club. The Cincinnati Bengals, with a litany of arrests to make "The Sopranos" blush.

That's what too often passes for NFL news.

It's the responsibility of our business to report those things. And, face it, in our a rubbernecking society, the public is drawn to those stories.

We've got a saying: You don't write a story when a plane lands safely.

On Friday, something compelled me to tell you that, figuratively, a plane landed safely.

Though, considering the spiriting of cooperation between Auburn and Alabama folks, maybe it is stop-the-presses news.

Two NFL players were in Huntsville, doing good work.

Which is what most NFL players do.

DeMeco Ryans, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Houston Texans and former Alabama star, and Karlos Dansby, the Arizona Cardinals' linebacker from Auburn, were celebs at the annual Battle at the Cove.

The tournament, which benefits the Downtown Rescue Mission, sent golfing Auburn fans off on the River course, golfing Alabama fans on the Highlands for competition against each other.  READ MORE

Cards Happy with Workout Turnout
Written by Paola Boivin/Arizona Republic

The Cardinals concluded their second week of voluntary team workouts Thursday feeling good about the amount of player participation.

The only no-show was tailback Edgerrin James, and that's because he chose to attend to some family business. James is expected to return next week and has participated in more offseason workouts than he has with previous teams.

It's helped that the club is not entangled in any contract disputes. Linebacker Karlos Dansby, who is entering the final year of his contract and is looking for an extension, has showed up in top shape. He is expected to make a smooth transition from outside to insider linebacker. READ MORE

Karlos talks with kids at a recent charity event. The hiring of new head coach Ken Whisenhunt and his staff created a positive vibe from top to bottom of the Cardinals organization earlier this offseason, and throughout the team’s mini-camp which concluded Monday, it was clear that optimism has carried onto the field and throughout the locker room.

The Cardinals held their fifth and final practice of the camp Monday morning and that same enthusiasm surrounded the organization.

“We are going in the right direction. Everybody is excited, because it is something new,” explained defensive tackle Darnell Dockett. “When you lose two or three years in a row, everybody is waiting for a new attitude.”

And judging by the high tempo of the practices, Dockett is spot-on in his assessment.

“One of the things that I feel is really important is establishing that practice ethic, and we’ve done that so I’m pleased,” offered Whisenhunt at the conclusion of camp Monday morning. “What we’re really working on is making sure we’re practicing hard. We realize there are going to be mistakes and those are the things you work on and correct.”

With 25 rookies on the field over the weekend there were plenty of wide-eyed players, but Whisenhunt was encouraged by the young talent.  READ MORE

“As a group I thought they did fairly well,” added Whisenhunt. “Usually there are some you can pick out early that don’t have a legitimate chance, but I didn’t see that in this camp. I saw a bunch of guys that are competing for spots and it is really going to come down to training camp and who can do it without making mistakes.”

Tuesday is a day off for the players, who can take a deep breath and assess their performance before organized team workouts begin on Wednesday.
